Board Siding - From Wood To Clapboard To Cement

So you want the look of some kind of board siding, but you’re not quite sure which kind of product you prefer.  You have definitely eliminated stucco or brick and stone siding, faux or otherwise.  Maybe you like the clapboard look, but you are a bit nervous about real wood board siding.  Fortunately for you, there are an abundance of board siding solutions, with both real wood and fiber cement alternatives.  Let’s have a quick look at a real wood board siding possibility and compare it with Hardie (more about this later) siding.

First, by using a cedar wood product, you can choose from a wide range of board siding options.  Given the fact that cedar is one of the most weather resistant and infestation resistant woods in the world, you won’t have to worry about warping or shrinking of board siding made from this natural resource.  Further, cedar is grown in abundance and replenished so that this resource remains environmentally friendly.

With cedar board siding there is no question that the natural beauty of the wood grain is its central attractive feature. There definitely is no replacing the grains and knots that show through in real cedar wood boards.  Paint and sealants easily adhere, making it incredibly easy to work with.  And the cedar makes for easy production of a wide variety of styles of board siding – bevel, board & batten, channel, tongue & groove, and wavy-edge bevel – these are just a few of the many styles.  Add shake board siding to this mix and you have yet another choice.

Of the fiber cement alternatives we should take a look at the imitation board siding made by James Hardie Building Products, Inc.  This company specializes in fiber cement siding and has been incredibly successful at coming up with non-wood solutions that replicate the look and feel of real wood, but eliminate some of the pitfalls and drawbacks of using real wood.

A wonderful example of the accomplishments of Hardie is illustrated by the HardiePlank lap siding.  This imitation board siding can be found on more than 4 million homes throughout the United States.  Furthermore, HardiePlank has been developed in such a way as to specifically adjust the material composition based on the specific climate region.  The company stands behind their claims to the extent of offering an incredible 30-year limited warranty for homes that use this type of lap board siding.

Many people claim that they cannot tell the difference between painted real wood board siding and Hardie siding, so precise is the imitation.  Paint adheres extremely well to this type of siding, making it easy for the home owner to change the exterior look.  The insulation value of this siding rivals that of cedar board siding as well.

So the choice is yours: real board siding or fiber cement board siding?  The job of comparison is now yours to do.  Either way, you’ll end up a winner when it comes to the appearance of your home and the protection it receives.
