Within the cedar siding category there are a number of different styles that allow the consumer to choose the appearance that they find the most pleasing and captivating. The range of cedar paneling siding styles includes among others, bevel, board & batten, channel, tongue & groove, and wavy-edge bevel. Furthermore, within the separate categories of siding made of cedar, you can vary the look by choosing from, for example, smooth, rough, and knotty grades. Virtually all of these styles are manufactured in easy to use paneling. Regardless of whether the paneling is tongue & groove, bevel, or any other presentation, the application process is pretty much the same – simple and straightforward. Another quite popular version of this siding material comes in the form of cedar shake siding. The appearance, as you can well imagine, is similar to that of the typical shake roof. Likewise, the application process of cedar shakes as siding is akin to that of the roof application process. The cedar shake siding appearances are as varied as the cedar paneling. From rough to smooth to split and rounded, shakes give the exterior of any house a warm, comfortable and rustic feeling of yesteryear. Unlike some other wood products, cedar is environmentally friendly as it is a replenishable resource. So don’t be dissuaded by claims to the contrary. It is also lightweight and quite easy to work with. A variety of stains and sealers adhere to cedar siding far more easily that they do to other woods or synthetic products. Furthermore, the insulation value of cedar is far superior to that of much of the siding competition, which will help you save on heating and cooling costs during periods of harsh weather. With respect to weather and nature, another of the many benefits of cedar siding is its ability to withstand many of the impacting elements of Mother Nature. It can withstand even the most potentially damaging effects of harsh climes as it will resist shrinking and warping. Cedar siding is also highly resistant to wood burrowing pests, infestation and wood rot. Siding costs for cedar vary about as much as the styles of the siding itself. Before you get too overwhelmed by each and every cost per square foot quote, you should probably narrow down your style choices to a couple main preferences and then start comparison shopping. For starters, to get a helpful idea as to costs, you should compare shakes with shakes and paneling with paneling. It is somewhat difficult to pinpoint specific prices across the board. In places like the Pacific Northwest, for example, where cedar is more plentiful, siding costs tend to be lower than in some other parts of the country. You can, however, make effective comparisons within your region. In the end, cedar siding, in any of the above presentations, will give your house the warm and inviting feeling that we hope all of our homes will have. |
