Lap Siding From Hardie, GAF, CertainTeed

Over the years the construction industry has evolved and, ironically, come full circle at the same time.  In fact, the changes, while astounding, have more to do with products and materials and how the industry uses them, than a leap in engineering.   A very basic example of the variety of material that has been incorporated into home construction of today can be illustrated by taking a look at lap siding.  Now, in addition to wood as a lap siding material of choice, we are able to count on aluminum, fiber cement, vinyl, and many others that have been able to replicate the look of this kind of siding.  All of these are readily used to recreate the classic look of horizontally applied and overlapped boards for the exterior of a variety of buildings.

In addition, the sophistication and overall understanding of the limitations of certain materials is exemplified by the use of cedar (environmentally friendly) as the primary wood of choice for lap siding.  At any rate, the material used in these planks or boards allows builders and homeowners the option of creating a traditional look while retaining the flexibility of choosing the best material for their circumstances.

With so much information available on lap siding, for example, the consumer/home owner is more in charge than ever before of how best to beautify and protect his or her home.  By perusing all the lap siding choices, you are assured of finding a host of reputable manufactures that produce your favored material.   For those that are drawn to fiber cement as their lap siding material, you’ll probably find yourself contemplating siding from James Hardie Building Products.  Of course you will also need to consider competitors like CertainTeed, GAF and others.  Weather resistant, infestation resistant, and easy to paint, cement fiber is a great lap siding product alternative.

You may prefer the use of vinyl in your lap siding.  If so, you are not alone.  Many builders and installers swear by this material for its ease of installation and its low maintenance reputation.  In the past some criticism was levied in this material’s direction for its non-natural appearance, but with so many advances in terms of color and texture choices, that criticism has been largely put to rest.  Plus, vinyl remains about the least expensive lap siding solution on the market.  CertainTeed, Georgia Pacific and Alcoa are some of the manufacturers you might research if you are sold on vinyl lap siding.

However, for the look and feel of natural wood grains, you really can’t do better than cedar wood lap siding.  The homeowner can rest assured that cedar is highly resistant to wood rot and wood pest infestation, making it an ideal lap siding wood.  You’ll not have to worry about durability either.  Cedar accepts sealants quite well so your cedar lap siding will hold up for years and years to come with just a semi-regular application.

To recreate the old look to the new.  Use the ideal wood choice in cedar for your lap siding, or explore all the newer materials to protect your home and keep it looking great.
