Doing Your Siding Installation Properly

Now that you are seriously considering a new look for the exterior of your home, you’ll need to do a little homework.  Assuming that you have decided to protect and beautify your home with some variety of siding, you should probably educate yourself a bit on the process of siding installation.  Regardless of whether you are accomplished enough to take on the project yourself or you leave it in the hands of an installer, knowing some basics about the proper siding installation procedure will insure that the task is completed correctly and, more importantly, your home receives years of problem free protection.

Independent of the material (vinyl, wood, aluminum, fiber cement, etc.), the initial phase of siding installation protocol is primarily uniform.  In fact, as you prepare for the installation of the new siding material, a list of what not to do will also be a helpful guide during the process.  A deliberate and methodical process will serve you well.  If your installer begins by hastily slapping up vinyl or wood siding panels, for example, it likely means that the preparation in advance of installation was not done properly.

The set up phase is when you can best insure that future repairs are minimal and that the eventual siding product will effectively protect your house.  Make sure that the surface is smooth to insure an even installation.  Take the time to scrape off loose and excess material and seal and caulk around doors and windows.  Once you have done the initial prep work, or the work has been done for you, subsequent procedures will vary based on the siding material.

When narrowing down your choice of materials, companies, contractors, etc. – insist on the installer explaining to you, in advance, the siding installation procedure.  You should feel comfortable with the final explanation.  Depending on the material, what areas of the home where installation takes place first is crucial.  With vinyl and many other siding materials, for example, the detail areas – arches, corner posts, dryer vents, light blocks, trim, etc. -- are installed prior to the larger exterior surfaces of the house.

Remember, the success of the entire project is the detail.  Take the example of fiber cement siding – you should avoid nailing the corner pieces of this material together.  Most likely a nail hammered into the board edge of fiber cement will result in a hairline crack or complete split of the board.  If this siding installation error is not addressed, the corners will sooner, rather than later, fall off of the house.  Additionally, when using cement fiber take special precaution to not drive the nails too deeply into the planks as this will compromise the holding strength of the nails and boards.  If you see that the installer is overly embedding nails into the cement fiber boards, you’ll be able to redirect him in time.

For the DIYer, there are siding installation guides on all the materials at most hardware stores and home improvement centers.  But again, prior to choosing someone to do the job, have him or her review the entire installation process with you before launching the project.  An ounce of siding prevention is worth a pound of installation cure.
